I am a mechanical engineer and product designer based in Hong Kong, with a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing and Design Engineering from Northwestern University. My work blends technical precision with human-centered design, where functionality and user experience meet.

With hands-on experience in product development, prototyping, and manufacturing, I am passionate about creating products that solve real-world problems while pushing the boundaries of innovation and design. I focus on crafting meaningful objects that people can connect with, enriching their daily lives through thoughtful design.

PurePress

sep 2021 - jun 2022

Conceptualized and developed product for home cooks that extends lifespan of used cooking oil. Identified innovation opportunity to not only improve sediment filtering, but also remove byproducts of oil degradation to reverse oil aging.

Benchmarked existing solutions, analyzed patents, designed and performed experiments, and performed a root cause analysis into oil degradation when exploring oil filtration and treatment methods. Prototyped and tested two part set: a pressure driven system that treats used cooking oil with physical and adsorbent filters, and a storage canister to maintain treated oil quality.

Isometric view of Anti-Roll Bar assembly

Anti-Roll Bar

sep 2019 - mar 2020

Designed and 3D modelled anti-roll bar assembly on SOLIDWORKS to meet new FSAE car stiffness targets, performing displacement and stress FEA analysis to validate.

Fabricated blades out of titanium with manual lathe and mill, forming threads using single-point threading method.

Ball Boy

jan - mar 2022

Translated elementary school student's drawing of a smiling snowboarding basketball into injection molded plastic toy. Simplified and optimized design for manufacturing, modeled parts and required tooling on NX, designed CAM operations for CNC mill.

Manufactured production run of 10 units, gaining firsthand experience of injection molding process.

Professional Experience (resume)

Thermal Laminating Corporation

September - December 2023
Evanston, IL

Student Assembly Line Analyst

  • Analyzed laminating machine assembly line, identifying bottlenecks and pain-points
  • Gathered primary data through interviews, observation, and participation to understand manufacturing and assembly process
  • Documented findings using journey/value-stream maps and Bills of Materials to characterize current operations
  • Facilitated communication between leadership and assembly line workers to streamline assembly line troubleshooting

Weber Grills Inc.

January - June 2023
Evanston, IL

Student Mechanical Engineer & Project Manager

  • Led team of 7 engineering students to design and deliver a backup battery system enabling 8 hours of continued grill operation without temperature fluctuation, exceeding client-specified metric of 90% power loss detection & operation success rate
  • Conducted client meetings to define project goals and metrics; designed and managed 5 critically functional sub-systems, delegating tasks based on expertise to prototype and manufacture functional prototype
  • Performed thermal simulation, ingress protection testing, and FMEA analysis, validating that functional prototype met or exceeded 17 client-specified metrics and recommended plans for client implementation and patent application

Segal Prototyping & Fabrication Lab

January - December 2022
Evanston, IL

Prototyping Specialist & Shop Trainer

  • Taught new students basic shop practices and principles, led mill and lathe training
  • Provided fabrication and prototyping guidance, design advice, and troubleshooting while fostering a collaborative, creative, and welcoming shop environment

Segal Design Institute

June - August 2021
Evanston, IL

Design Engineering Intern

  • Prototyped plastic containers manufactured out of a single sheet of plastic, utilizing living hinges to repeatably unfold to optimize sanitization workflow in hospital setting
  • Selected HDPE as the ideal plastic, considering adherence to medical standards and flexural modulus, and testing solvent durability and hinge fatigue life to ensure prototype could be used throughout NIH-sponsored clinical trial for diabetes management training kits
  • Fabricated vacuum-formed packaging inserts and silicone resin skin molds

Studio Doozy

July - December 2020
